‘Black brilliance, all year long’: school board celebrating Black Heritage Month with an eye to the future
The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is celebrating “Black Heritage, Black Brilliance and Black Joy” this February as a part of Black Heritage Month.
Staff at UGDSB say school-wide assemblies and online resources are a starting point, and 365 days of Black brilliance all year long is a focus.
Sherwyn Solomon, UGDSB principal of Equity and Inclusion, says Tracy Cain will be one of the featured guest speakers, telling lived experiences of Black Canadians from her perspective as a Black woman whose ancestors came to Canada through the Underground Railroad.
Both Solomon and UGDSB’s Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility Commissioner Alicia Ralph emphasized the importance of looking beyond just February, while making an effort to highlight Black joy alongside heritage and brilliance.
CICW spoke with both Ralph and Solomon about the month.
