RDCK residents vote no to curbside collection program
The results for the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK) May 11 referendum to bring curbside collection services to some areas were made official yesterday.
Central Kootenay areas F, H, and J decisively voted to “no” to curbside collection services in their communities. The RDCK was offering three stream services (waste, recycling and organics) in all communities.
Area F the north shore of the Kootenay River and Area H the Slocan Valley do not receive any collection services. Areas F and H saw 1,023 people voting “no” and 131 voting “yes.”
Area J communities surrounding the city of Castlegar on the banks of the Columbia River and Lower Arrow Lake currently receive recycling collection services that the RDCK is not involved in. Waste and organics are disposed of by residents. Area J had a similar result to the other areas, with 830 votes “no” and 103 votes “yes.”
