ELMNT FM News Briefs: Brampton High School placed under lockdown, YRP Alert Chinese community in extortion scams
The Chinguacousy Secondary School in Brampton was placed under lockdown after reports of a fight. Peel Regional Police arrived at the high school following reports of a possible gun or knife. According to the Peel Regional Police X Page (Twitter), no weapon was confirmed to be on school grounds. Surrounding high schools were also placed in a hold and secure as a precaution. One Male youth was brought into custody, and charges are unknown as the investigation is still ongoing.
York Regional Police (YRP) alerted the Chinese community about a rise in extortion. In a written statement York Regional Police discuss how scammers get in touch with their victims deceiving them into believing that they are in legal trouble in China. Once convinced, the scammers demand a transfer of funds or personal information to resolve the fabricated legal issues, If the victim does not comply threats of arrest or deportation are used.
