World premier unites Indigenous, non-Indigenous artists in Brantford
The Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) in Brantford, Ontario is a former Indian Residential School that’s history was associated with trying to assimilate Indigenous children through decades of punishment, lack of proper food and separation from family and culture.
On, Feb. 25, the WCC was host to 14 artists from across Canada that co-created expressions of identity on the colonial construct of Canada. Entitled “One Land, Two Hearts: Where We Stand,” the project invited participants to examine their identity in connection to the land that sustains all of us.
The project featured short films, dance, music and spoken word was led by creative director Cyrus Sundar Singh, who is a scholar and Gemini an award winning filmmaker. Singh reached out to WCC Executive Director Heather George to host the event to create a multi-media project about belonging. George says the WCC allows these conversations that can only be had in community.
