Foundation exploring new approach with one-time charitable gifts
The Cortes Island Community Foundation (CICF) has been trying a different method of supporting those in need through a program called, “The Giving Well”.
An anonymous donor offered a total of $350,000 in 2023 with the request that it was given to people with “no strings attached.”
Last year, the CICF split the donation in half, requesting people to apply in the summer 2023 with the help of “Community Cultivators.” They received over 80 applications, requesting a total of over $1,000,000 in aid. The foundation selected 30 applicants and gave away $180,000 total.
CICF utilizes an open feedback loop, and improved accessibility to award the second half of the funds. Part of the program’s mission is to learn more about where and what the need is for Cortes residents.
Applications for the final round are due May 5. Locals can email outreach@cortesfoundation.ca to find out more.
