Dog control bylaw fails to pass on Cortes Island
A dog control bylaw will not be implemented on Cortes Island after 221 residents filed a form in opposition through the alternative approval process (AAP).
The outcome was announced at the most recent Strathcona Regional District meeting on April 24.
“This is the end of quite a big process…221 people voted-wrote in against the service, which is almost 20 percent of the island,” Regional Director Mark Vonesch said at the meeting. “And although this is a divided issue on Cortes, I’m going to be supporting the results of this AAP and declining further movement on it.”.
The bylaw (Bylaw 522) was initiated due to a petition signed by over 100 residents in favor of a dog control system being implemented on the island. The only place on Cortes Island that currently requires dogs to be on leash is Smelt Bay Provincial Park.
