Indigenous play uses game show format to raise questions about “Pretend Indians” (Pt. 2 of 2)
January Rogers is the Six Nations playwright behind the play “Blood Sport”. She says her play may find humour in the topic of two contestants trying to “claim their culture” in a game show but she also says, there are many people trying to find their true identity and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.
It’s a topic that has reached national if not international attention with recent questions raised about singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Indigenous heritage. A Six Nations musician, Josh Miller, lost out to Sainte-Marie when running in the same category.
In the second and final part of this conversation, CKRZ talks To Rogers about the ideas behind the play and her process in writing it.
