Kootenay memoir recognized with award from BC Historical Federation
Earlier this month, Ellen Schwartz was acknowledged at the BC Historical Federation annual conference with the Community History Award for her book Galena Bay Odyssey: Reflections of a Hippie Homesteader.
Galena Bay Odyssey: Reflections of a Hippie Homesteader tells the story of Schwartz’s journey of moving from New York to living on a communal farm in the Kootenays in the 1970s. Throughout the memoir, Schwartz reflects on what her homesteader experience taught her about living more fully, honestly, and ecologically, according to the author.
Schwartz is an award-winning author of more than 18 books for children who also works as a corporate writer and editor and as a freelance magazine writer. After a decade of being hippie homesteaders in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Schwartz and her husband now live in Burnaby, BC.
Schwartz joined CJLY to discuss her time in the Kootenays and receiving the Community History Award.
