Leaked emails, growing case numbers, spark renewed calls for investigation into unexplained neurological symptoms
Recent media coverage from The Guardian news site has drawn attention back to the growing number of patients with unexplained neurological symptoms in New Brunswick and beyond.
CHMA News spoke with local MLA and Green Health critic Megan Mitton to get her reaction to a story quoting the leaked emails of Michael Coulthart, a federal scientist who says he’s been “cut off” from further work on the issue.
They also talk to Sackville resident Lori Ann Roness, whose father developed an unexplained tremor about a year and a half ago, and is currently a patient of Dr. Alier Marrero, the New Brunswick neurologist who continues to report the unexplained cases.
Both are calling on provincial and federal health officials to further investigate the cases and potential environmental exposures which could be causing them.
In response to an enquiry from CHMA, New Brunswick Department of Health spokesperson Sean Hatchard said that Public Health New Brunswick has received 29 completed reports in the last year from Dr. Marrero notifying the department about unexplained neurological symptoms in patients, and the Department is reviewing those reports.
