Museum’s new annual exhibit peels back the layers of home
The Cortes Museum and Archives Society debuted their 2024 exhibit on Sunday “From the Ground Up”.
The exhibit explores the unique ways the island has built community and homes, frequently moving and re-using entire buildings.
Monika Hoffman and Melanie Boyle co-curated the exhibit and collaborated with the Cortes Housing Society.
“The museum itself is part of that reuse and repurposing of dwellings and structures to make do with what we have on the island,” Hoffman said.
She explained that this historical perspective may provide, “ideas for solutions that we’re facing contemporaneously…there are potential solutions out there that other eras have faced and that we might be able to implement now.”
The exhibit will be on display throughout the year and the curators anticipate the exhibit to evolve as community members contribute their own photos and stories to the museum.
