Selkirk College officially opens new dorms at Silver King campus

Selkirk College officially opened their new housing facility at their Silver King campus in Nelson on Thursday.

Students started moving into the 36-bed housing facility in mid-March and an event was held to celebrate its opening. The event included speeches from the school’s staff and Nelson-Creston MLA Brittny Anderson. A tour of the facilities followed.

Part of the Provincial Government’s Homes for People Action Plan, the Selkirk College project consists of the 36-bed housing facility at Silver King and a 114 unit project that will open at the Castlegar Campus later this year.

First announced in 2021, the $37.7 million project will increase the college’s on-campus housing by 71 per cent. The project was funded by the provincial government and the Columbia Basin Trust.

Nelson tree recognized as the largest grand fir in BC’s interior

A grand fir tree on Selkirk College’s Silver King Campus was added to the BC Big Tree Registry earlier this week. It is now recognized as the largest grand fir in BC’s interior.

The Big Tree Registry is managed by the University of British Columbia. It’s a way of monitoring the largest trees of each species in the province and educating the public about them.

Jamie Moye, an adventure journalist who resides in Nelson, was the first to notice the tree and began the process of nominating it for the registry. She then reached out to Selkirk College to see if they would be interested in joining her on the project.

In a press release from Selkirk College Feb. 27, student Jaden Pearman was quoted saying, “when you are around a huge tree like that, it puts an emotion to the work we are doing.” Students from the Forest Technology program contributed by confirming measurements made by a biologist and naming the tree “Grandalf the Fir.”

Selkirk College graduate competes on CBC pottery show

A graduate of the ceramics program at Selkirk College, Alice Gibson of Penticton, is one of the contestants on a new CBC show called The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down.

At 22-years-old, Gibson is the show’s youngest contestant. She recently took up pottery four years ago before studying at Selkirk College. Speaking of her time at the school, Gibson said, “it was amazing. I learned so much there and some of my closest friends I met in that program.”

The show, which debuts on Feb. 8, features ten amateur potters competing to be crowned “best at the wheel.” It is hosted by Jennifer Robertson who is known for her work as an actor on Schitt’s Creek. Judges include renowned artists Brendan Tang and Natalie Waddell as well as guest judge Seth Rogan.

Selkirk College asks the community for help housing students

Selkirk College reached out to the community this week for help finding housing for students. Between the Castlegar and Nelson Campuses there are approximately 2000 students enrolled for in person programs.

In recent weeks, students have been dropping their courses for the fall semester due to being unable to find affordable places to live. The college says it is unknown how many students have dropped their programs because of the lack of housing or how many need housing, but it is a concern.

Both the Castlegar and the Silver King campus in Nelson are undergoing construction to add a total of 150 additional units, though they won’t be ready until 2024. The school also offers a home-stay program.

Allison Alder, a dean at Selkirk College, says “students are hardworking, good in our homes [and], good in our community. Hopefully people will be interested in getting to know some students better and providing some housing.”
