Alpaca rescuer celebrates tenth year of ‘gentle method’ wool shearing
This spring, local islander Serene Watson sheared her alpacas for the tenth time, marking an anniversary since she rescued them in 2013.
Watson has been caring for three alpacas as part of her sanctuary for rescued animals. The camelids were rehomed by the Vancouver Island Llama and Alpaca Club. Watson has managed to tame the animals using a gentler method that forgoes the use of any restraints.
Camelids are a group of animals that include alpacas, Bactrian camels, dromedaries, guanacos, llamas, and vicuñas. The United Nations has declared the year 2024 “The Year of the Camelids.”
