Scout leader fears end of historic Scout hut after fire damage and theft
For almost a 100 years, thousands of Scouts have walked through the doors of the 1st Nanaimo Scouts Hut, but now after a fire and break-in, the future of the historical hut is unclear.
Built in 1926, the hut has been home to the 1st Nanaimo Scout Group, but in the last three weeks, the hut has seen a fire and break-in, both on separate days, causing damage and forcing the hut to shut down.
On October 16, unknown arsonists started a fire on the porch of the Scout hut causing damage to the exterior corners. Eleven days later, on October 27, it was discovered that during the night, someone had broken into the hut, stealing gear and significantly damaging the door.
CHLY spoke with Jordan Stanley, commissioner of the 1st Nanaimo Scout Group, about the two incidents and the worries he has about the costs of fixing the damage.
