LaSalle Causeway closure significantly impacts Kingston’s peak tourism season: CEO
After five weeks of the LaSalle Causeway closure, Kingston’s tourism sector is already seeing a major impact and projecting a difficult season.
The LaSalle Causeway has been closed since March 31 due to an incident during scheduled maintenance, separating Kingston’s east end and key attraction Fort Henry from downtown. In their last update on Friday, Public Services and Procurement Canada estimated another seven to nine weeks of work to repair the bridge.
The closure is affecting various attractions and tourism-adjacent businesses across the city, according to Megan Knott, CEO of Tourism Kingston. Most pressingly, cruise ships docked in the Inner Harbour north of the LaSalle Causeway are currently completely inaccessible.
“That this closure occurred at the start of peak tourism season and has literally trapped two key visitor attractions is catastrophic,” states Knott.
