Sherbrooke implements a temporary new vehicle registration tax to fund public transportation
The City of Sherbrooke will be implementing a temporary $12 annual tax per passenger vehicle, subject to further discussions and a formal vote.
At the May 7 Plenary Committee meeting, different scenarios on implementing a new tax for funding public transportation were discussed. Possible annual fees for motorists ranged from $34 to $185 before the final recommendation of $12 was agreed upon.
Mayor Évelyne Beaudin emphasized the need for genuine discussions regarding the future of the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS), supported by unanimous council approval. However, not all proposals received unanimous support, with Councilor Geneviève La Roche highlighting the challenge of financing a more efficient transportation network. Councilman Paul Gingues expressed concerns about taxing individuals for services perceived as suboptimal, stressing the importance of meeting citizens’ needs.
Members of the public can let their opinions be known until September by contacting local council members.
