Tragic start to Safe Boating Awareness Week
The first long weekend of the summer is a popular time for people to enjoy time on the water, but it often a weekend where boating accidents happen.
That’s one of the reasons why the Victoria Day weekend is the kickoff to Safe Boating Awareness Week, organized by the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC).
Sadly, the week started with a tragic boating accident on Bob’s Lake where three people were killed and five injured in a nighttime collision involving a speed boat and an open fishing boat on a quiet lake north of Kingston.
The OPP are out on the waters full force educating, checking and charging boaters, kayakers, canoers and paddlers in an effort to keep people safe on the water. The CSBC states that 80% of Canadians who drown while boating were not wearing lifejackets or not wearing it properly.
CJPE News took to the water to see what local law enforcement is doing to keep local waterways safe.
