Windsor’s Chinese New Year celebration brings new artists and performances
The Essex County Chinese Canadian Association hosted a Year of the Dragon Celebration at Windsor’s Devonshire Mall on February 11. Now in its 7th year, the organization brought new artists to perform during the four hour celebration.
The Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate new beginnings with friends and family. The celebration was inspired by a Chinese legend, describing a monster that once terrorized villagers at the start of every year. To rid the village of the monster, the villagers scared it away with loud noises, bright lights, and the colour red. This transformed into the celebrations we have today.
This event includes a Dragon Dance, cultural performances, craft-making, and more. CJAM spoke to the MC and Event Planner, Catherine Fung, about the event.
