A humpback whale was spotted with an entangled fishing line off the coast of Campbell River on June 28.
Fishing industry waste makes up the “majority” of marine waste collected along the coasts and rural islands in the Comox Valley Strathcona Waste Management (CVSWM) Region, according to services coordinator Stephanie Vidal.
Vidal recently took part in beach cleanup projects on Quadra and Cortes Islands in June and has coordinated similar projects on Hornby and Denman Islands. She explained how prevalent industry waste is amongst the cleanups.
“The majority of the 96,000 kilos (collected) is aquaculture gear… like oyster baskets, buoys, foam floats.”
Plastic waste collected is sent to the Ocean Legacy Facility on the mainland where it is pelleted and used to make recycled products.
